The Advanced Reading Programme - Funnix 2

Funnix Reading Logo

Who is it For?

Funnix 2 is for children who have completed Funnix Beginning Reading.
Funnix Beginning Reading

or -
children who can easily read New Zealand primary school year 2 or 3 material, even if the children are younger than 6 years old.

What will it do?

Make sure your son or daughter reads independently, able to read chapter books and non-fiction -- like a very fluent 9-10 year old reader.

How long will it take?

20 minutes for each lesson, for 100 lessons.

What will I get?

A Reader Book, two CDs and a Parent Manual that all train your child to love reading.

The Reader This book contains 100 stories, one for each lesson of the programme.

The Placement and Review Disc This computer CD has 20 review lessons from Funnix Beginning Reading. You use the Placement Test to check where in the programme your child should start.

The main CD has a Parent Guide and the Funnix programme. The Parent Guide shows you how to present the lessons and even how to accelerate your child through the programme. The main reading programme has 100 easy lessons to make your son or daughter a good reader.

The Parent Manual This booklet summarizes information from the CDs that is helpful for parents.

What's in Each Lesson?

1) Sounds and Words: Children have fun identifying words and letters on the screen. The words are from upcoming stories. So children have a motivated reason to learn every word.

The teacher on the disc tells children what to do. Children are directed to sound out some words, spell some, and read some "the fast way" without sounding out.

For some words, children first identify the underlined part, then identify the word.

Lesson 50

2) Story Reading: Firstly, children read each story from their book aloud.

The book purposefully has no illustrations. Illustrations appear on the computer after children have read the story.

Most stories are presented in two or more parts. One part per lesson. This story is the first of a five-part story about a moose and a goose.

Lesson 50

Stories get longer as the programme continues. This lesson has the last part of a story about a hunting dog with an incredible sense of smell.

Lesson 50

Secondly, children answer comprehension questions about the story. Your son or daughter reads each question aloud and tells you the answer.

Lesson 50

Thirdly, children read another version of the same story on the computer. Comic style illustrations with balloons show what characters are saying or thinking. Fun animations motivate children to love their reading even more.

Lesson 50

3) Workbook-type Activities:

Funnix 2 provides workbook type activities on screen. Children number their lined paper and write answers to the on-screen items.

Review Reminder:

"To save time later, I thought it worthwhile to spend the time and money now so that she gets ahead rather than falling behind.

I don't think that you can leave it up to the schooling system and one teacher when they have so many other students. A teacher can only do so much and then it is up to us parents to do the rest."

Review:

"I think that Funnix is a very good program.

English is my second language, so I myself could learn useful things about reading. Even though English is my second language, I could still teach my 4 year old son, Kento, to read using Funnix and he could learn very well. That surprised me. He's just 4 years old, but can read so well already.

Funnix is so fast, I could see his progress. That really encouraged me. So I kept using Funnix to the end of the program. Kento has just turned five and he is now reading from Funnix 2."
